A. Wainwright Evening. Rheged, Penrith. Sat 11th May 2024.
A. Wainwright Evening. Rheged, Penrith. Saturday, 11th May, 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
A lifelong love of the outdoors and admiration for Alfred Wainwright inspired Yorkshire-born engineer Chris Butterfield to build an extensive archive honouring the world-famous fell walker and safeguarding his legacy.
Assisted by his wife, Priscilla, Chris has amassed an extensive private collection of Wainwright material and created a popular Facebook group, Alfred Wainwright Books & Memorabilia, and a website, alfredwainwright.co.uk
At Rheged, Chris discusses the life of Alfred Wainwright, his book publishing history and how it all began over 70 years ago. He also reveals discoveries exclusive to this event, including never-before-seen photos of Wainwright taken by his good friend Ken Shepherd and a rare interview with Wainwright.
There will be stories behind the collaborations with former associates of Wainwright, including the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, who enabled Wainwright’s friend and publisher, Andrew Nichol 91, to fulfil his wish to pay his respects to Wainwright at Innominate Tarn on Haystacks.
Chris, the author of Wainwright Memories, has published numerous articles about Wainwright and has appeared on television and radio to discuss the life, work, and achievements of the late, great fell wanderer.
Q&A, book signing, and special guest attendance, including his publisher and friend, Andrew Nichol, and Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team members.
Book sale royalties will be donated to the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team.
