Original Scottish Mountain Drawings Negatives and More (1976)

Original Westmorland Gazette negative for the Scottish Mountain Drawings – The North Western Highlands Vol. 3 published in 1976.

A unique and historically important piece of Wainwright publishing history – the sole surviving printing film negative sheet used in the production of this Scottish Mountain Drawings book.

This original production negative was used in the offset lithographic printing process to produce the printed pages of the published volume. It represents a physical link to how Wainwright’s work was brought to print during its original production.

The sheet features the book’s contents page and carries a dedication to Bob Walker and, more significantly, a remark by Clifford Turner, a long-serving Westmorland Gazette employee. Turner had written “Slept Here 1976” directly onto the negative – a small moment of humour preserved.

Also included are original Westmorland Gazette negatives used by the book publishing department during the 1980s. They produced leaflets sent to retailers and the Press along with the books.
